CDAC OS

CLIENT: CDAC, GOVT. OF INDIA

Project Overview: Powering India’s Digital Infrastructure

Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS Linux) is an Indian national open-source operating system developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC). Designed to enhance digital sovereignty and provide a secure, localized computing environment, BOSS Linux is widely adopted across government departments, educational institutions, and public sector undertakings.

Our team was tasked with a critical component of this national initiative: engineering and optimizing the core web browser module.

The Challenge

A modern operating system requires a fast, secure, and highly efficient web browser. For a government-scale OS like BOSS Linux, the challenge was unique and multi-layered:

  • Hardware Constraints: The OS is deployed across a massive variety of hardware, including older and low-spec machines in rural government offices, panchayats, and public schools.

  • Localization & Accessibility: It needed to flawlessly support complex Indic languages and regional scripts to ensure accessibility for non-English speaking citizens.

  • Air-Tight Security: As a government-backed operating system handling sensitive administrative data, the browser module required stringent security standards to prevent tracking, data leaks, and external vulnerabilities.

Our Contribution & Implementation

We successfully developed, optimized, and integrated the primary browser module for the BOSS ecosystem. Rather than just wrapping an existing browser, we engineered a solution tailored for Indian digital infrastructure:

  1. Core Resource Optimization: We stripped down unnecessary background processes and bloatware. The result is a browser that consumes minimal RAM and CPU, allowing smooth internet access even on legacy Pentium-era hardware.

  2. Indic Language Rendering Engine: We enhanced the text-rendering engine to perfectly support 18+ Indian regional languages, ensuring digital inclusivity across all states.

  3. Seamless OS Integration: The browser is deeply integrated with BOSS Linux’s core security protocols and local file systems, providing a native, unified, and crash-resistant user experience.

  4. Open-Source Compliance: We ensured the entire module adhered strictly to open-source licensing (GPL) and Government of India compliance guidelines.

The Impact & Scale

Our contributed module is now an integral part of the BOSS Linux ecosystem. Today, the operating system boasts over 6 Million+ active deployments across India.

From enabling digital classrooms in remote villages to securing sensitive communications in defense and administrative mainframes, our browser module serves as the primary, secure gateway to the internet for millions of Indian citizens.
